Little Lesson #1: Nsima In order to truly help people, it is essential to understand their culture, their life experiences, and what it means to live a day in their shoes. With this in mind, Africa Bags is excited to share some insight into life in Malawi through “Little Lesson” posts which will explain different aspects of what it means to live in Malawi! Read below for our very first “Little Lesson” about the process of making a staple Malawian dish, Nsima. Nsima is a dish which is vital to Malawian food culture as the main ingredient, maize, is one of their most widely grown and easily accessible crops and the dish is filled with important nutrients. The first picture is in Kamweko Village, and shows the process of making Nsima. Malawians dry the maize (corn) and pick the kernels off the cobs. In the picture they are pounding the dry kernels into a flour, called wufu. In the second photo, also taken in Kamweko Village, the next step in the Nsima process is shown as the wufu is sifted. The final step after this would be to boil the wufu so that it becomes a starchy thick porridge. Visit our page next week for another “Little Lesson” into Malawian culture! #helpingmalawi #food #Nsima #education
