Little Lesson #3: Literacy Rates in Malawi 📚✏️🎓 According to UNESCO, the literacy rate within Malawi for persons aged 15 and older is 69.8% for men and 55.2% for women (2015). This not only shows the disparity between male and female education rates within the country, but also exemplifies the lack of resources being dedicated to changing this problem. While the literacy rate for women has increased from around 45% in 1985, the sad reality is that this growth plateaued at about 55% since around 2000 (UNESCO 2015). Africa Bags is dedicating a large part of our organization to supporting education within Malawi, especially focusing on women’s education. One of our biggest successes in this area is that we have built women’s restrooms at 8 different schools so that women can still go to school while on their periods. While this does target the gap in literacy rates among Malawi men and women, we need more support from the community in order to help women’s literacy rates continue to rise!
